In the north aisle there is a blocked doorway, (possibly filled in during the Civil War) that was known as ‘The Door of Excommunication’ through which people were punished by being symbolically and literally thrown out from the church.

On it is fixed part of an old tomb, probably the oldest piece of surviving sculpture in the Church and probably coming from a Norman church built by Roger de Montgomery on the same site.
